Google Merchant Center Suspended for Misrepresentation: Complete Fix Guide

A Google Merchant Center suspension for misrepresentation is one of the most frustrating things that can happen to an ecommerce brand. Your Shopping Ads and Performance Max campaigns go dark overnight. Revenue drops. And the suspension notice from Google is maddeningly vague: "Misrepresentation of self or products."

After helping 500+ ecommerce brands recover from GMC suspensions, we've built a systematic approach that fixes most accounts in 1-2 appeals. Here's the complete guide.

Why Google Suspends for Misrepresentation

Google's Misrepresentation policy exists to protect shoppers from misleading or untrustworthy stores. The issue is that Google's automated systems cast an extremely wide net. Many legitimate stores get flagged for technical compliance issues that have nothing to do with intentional misrepresentation.

The most common triggers fall into categories: business identity mismatches, policy page problems, trust and credibility issues, product information problems, and technical website issues.

The 29 Points Google Checks

Through hundreds of successful appeals, we've identified the 29 specific compliance points that Google checks. We've compiled these into our free GMC Misrepresentation Checklist. Here are the major categories:

Business Identity (Points 1-7)

  • Business name matches exactly between your website and GMC account
  • Physical address is consistent across website, GMC, and Google Business Profile
  • Phone number format matches everywhere it appears
  • Contact email uses your domain (not gmail, yahoo, etc.)
  • About Us page with real company information
  • Contact page with multiple ways to reach you
  • Business registration or incorporation visible if applicable

Policy Pages (Points 8-14)

  • Return policy is clear, specific, and matches GMC settings
  • Shipping policy with delivery timeframes that match reality
  • Privacy policy that mentions data collection practices
  • Terms of service covering purchase terms
  • Policies are not hidden — linked in footer and accessible from all pages
  • Policy content is original, not copied from another store
  • Refund timeframe and process clearly explained

Trust & Credibility (Points 15-21)

  • No fake reviews or testimonials with stock photos
  • No inflated credibility claims ("#1 rated" without source)
  • SSL certificate active on all pages
  • No broken links or empty pages on the site
  • Professional design that doesn't look like a scam site
  • Real product photos, not solely manufacturer stock images
  • Active social media profiles linked from the site

Product & Pricing (Points 22-29)

  • Prices in GMC feed match website prices exactly
  • Product availability matches between feed and website
  • No misleading sales or discount claims
  • Product descriptions are accurate and original
  • Checkout process works correctly end-to-end
  • Currency matches between GMC and website
  • No hidden fees added during checkout
  • Tax handling is correct and transparent

The Fix Process: Step by Step

Step 1: Audit Every Point

Go through all 29 points systematically. Don't skip anything. The suspension usually isn't caused by one big issue — it's the accumulation of several small ones. Fix everything, not just what you think triggered the suspension.

Step 2: Fix All Issues Before Appealing

The biggest mistake brands make is rushing to appeal before fixing everything. Google gives you limited appeals. If you appeal with issues still present, you waste an appeal and may face a longer review period. Fix everything first, then appeal once.

Step 3: Write a Clear Appeal

In your appeal, be specific about what you fixed. Don't write a generic "we've made improvements" appeal. List every change: "Updated return policy to include 30-day window with specific process, added domain email to contact page, removed third-party reviews with stock photos, fixed price mismatches on 12 products."

Step 4: Wait Patiently

Google typically reviews appeals within 3-7 business days. Don't submit multiple appeals while waiting — this resets the review queue. Submit once and wait for the response.

Can You Still Run Google Ads Without GMC?

Yes. While Shopping and Performance Max require an active Merchant Center, you can still scale with Google Search Ads, YouTube, Demand Gen, Display, and Remarketing. Many brands successfully grow Google Ads revenue while their GMC suspension is being resolved. We've built entire scaling strategies for brands running without Shopping Ads.

Don't Buy a GMC Account

We see brands tempted to buy or rent a GMC account to bypass their suspension. This is a terrible idea. Google links accounts to business identities and payment methods. Purchased accounts are frequently flagged and suspended, often resulting in a permanent ban that extends to all your future accounts. The legitimate approach — fixing compliance issues — is faster and actually works.

When to Get Professional Help

If you've been suspended multiple times or your account has been flagged as a repeat offender, professional help can make the difference. At Shopiator, we use a systematic 29-point checklist and have successfully recovered hundreds of suspended accounts. Most get reinstated within 1-2 appeals.
